Originally published in 1965, and available remaindered through most of the 70s, THE GREAT COMIC BOOK HEROES was the first book ever published devoted to the comics of the Golden Age. In addition to Jules Feiffer’s vivid recollections of the era, both as a reader and then as an early comic book professional (I was particularly inspired by the reproduction of the cover to an amateur comic book Feiffer produced before he entered the business), the volume reprinted vintage stories starring Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, the Human Torch, Wonder Woman, The Sub-Mariner, Captain America, Plastic Man and The Spirit.

I found my copy in a department store, as I recall, sometime around 1976. I was a little bit disappointed that I had read many of the stories collected here before, in either SECRET ORIGINS OF THE SUPER DC HEROES or in books reprinted as FAMOUS 1ST EDITION treasuries. But it was the Timely stories reprinted here that got me to take a second look at the current Marvel books–though I didn’t read those Torch, Cap and Subby stories for months, since I didn’t like Marvel comics.
