Comics in the Wild 20

You should know the drill by now. This is an assortment of old photographs that I’ve gathered together in my travels depicting either the comic book readers of yesteryear devouring their four-color treasures or else newsstands and outlets where vintage comic books were being stocked and sold. So it’s a look back into the past of our hobby.

      1. Yes indeed, but I wonder where Topper was.

Speaking of whom, I was today years old when I learned he got his nickname from his supposed resemblance to Mickey the Monkey, cover star of the long-running British comic the Topper – as in, “I see you’ve got your Topper head on, mate.”

      2. “Got yer Topper head on, bate” 😅🙏

I’ll guess it’s the 1st album year. Tory Crimes)Terry Chimes on drums. Maybe he couldn’t make the shoot. But the way the 3 of them look makes me think it’s early days. Especially Joe & Paul.

    1. The photo of The Clash has them dressed as they looked on the cover of their first LP, released in April 1976, so this photo is probably from the same sessions and probably taken, like the cover photo, by Kate Simon. Terry Chimes left the band early, returned to record the debut LP, then left, so that’s why he isn’t there, and this is probably before Topper joined. Depending on the lead time needed between taking cover photos and releasing the record I’d say this photo is from late 1976 or very early 1977.
