This Alex Schomburg cover for EXCITING COMICS is as chock-a-block full of imagery as any of his Timely covers, and yet it’s almost the antithesis of them, in that here it’s the heroes who seem needlessly violent and brutal. Sure, those are enemy Japanese soldiers (caricatured hatefully though they are), but they’re not doing anything particularly evil or aggressive. And yet here comes the Black Terror with a steamroller to mash them into paste. And, not content with that, he feels the need to machine gun them down first. Sidekick Tim is positively gleeful as he feels the bodies of the enemy snap and pulverize underneath the heavy roller. If this doesn’t constitute a war crime, i don’t know what does.
