In the late 1970s, there likely wasn't a format for comic books that I loved more than the Pocket Books series of early Marvel reprints. Getting chronological collections of the earliest Marvel stories was a godsend to me, something that I never quite thought I'd get to experience, and so I pursued them avidly. But … Continue reading BC: SPIDER-WOMAN POCKET BOOKS
I was very surprised to come across this second volume of Doctor Strange adventures in the Pocket Books line of paperback reprints in a local bookstore. These releases had seemed to have been tied to the appearances of the Marvel characters on television, and while the initial Doctor Strange volume had been released to capitalize … Continue reading BHOC: DOCTOR STRANGE POCKET BOOKS Volume 2
It was at about this point that my family went to see the film BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY at the local movie theater. We didn't realize it at the time--well, I didn't, at least--but this film was actually the pilot movie for a new television series that would debut in a couple of … Continue reading BHOC: MARVEL NOVEL SERIES #5
As a kid, I didn't really have any way to get information about what new comic books and related publications would be coming out when. I was dimly aware of fanzines, but I never tried to purchase any on the regular--my meager funds were needed to buy actual comics, after all. So I had no … Continue reading BHOC: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN POCKET BOOKS Volume 3

So at around this point, I finally got my hands on a copy of the first volume of the MARVEL POCKET BOOKS paperback collections of early AMAZING SPIDER-MAN stories. Some months earlier, I had bought a copy of Volume 2 and loved it, but the first volume was by that point simply no place to … Continue reading BHOC: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN POCKET BOOKS Volume 1
One of the benefits to the Doctor Strange television movie airing was that there was suddenly an interesting in doing a bunch of Doctor Strange-themed ancillary publishing. I hadn't really connected with the character before this. Especially in the 1970s, his stories tended to be heady and metaphysical in the manner of the time, and … Continue reading BHOC: DOCTOR STRANGE POCKET BOOKS #1
It was on a shopping trip to the Smith Haven Mall that I came across this Pocket Books paperback reprint of early Spider-Man stories in one of the three bookstores that were located within that mall. Despite the fact that it was the second volume in the series and I didn't know whether I would … Continue reading BHOC: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN POCKET BOOKS Volume 2
One of my regular stops whenever my family would make a weekend shopping trip to the Smith Haven Mall was one of a number of book sellers. It's hard to imagine today, when finding locations that are devoted to selling nothing but books is a difficult proposition in a lot of places, but in the … Continue reading BHOC: INCREDIBLE HULK POCKET BOOKS
