Let's get this out of the way first: I don't like the cover. I understand why it was done this way--with his back turned, in the black and white Previews catalog of the era, Professor Zoom would still be mistaken for Barry Allen, his telltale chest insignia hidden. But it's still an image of a … Continue reading Perfect Game – FLASH #79
There's no such thing as a perfect comic book--or really, a perfect anything. Into any production some error or weakness is going to creep. It's inevitable, and will be so long as human beings are responsible for creative work. But that doesn't mean that on occasion perfection isn't approached. Every once in a while a … Continue reading Perfect Game – Introduction
A post from my old Marvel blog about the Harvey Awards and the reaction to a particular win one year. I ordered a copy of this MARVEL TREASURY EDITION featuring the Fantastic Four from the Superhero Merchandise catalog--or as the firm would later be known, Heroes World. They had bought out Marvel and DC's back-stock of their various Treasury Editions and would sell them for years thereafter, often advertising in the comics themselves. I eventually … Continue reading BHOC: MARVEL TREASURY EDITION #2
I think it's an important concept for fans to grasp hold of that Doctor Who has changed. This is nothing new, the long history of the series is rife with format and tone and style changes. So while I still love the elements of the "classic" New Who, it's not that show any more. No … Continue reading Doctor Who: The Haunting of Villa Diodati
A bit of evidence has surfaced which casts some doubt on the story I related previously concerning how the difficulties in getting DAREDEVIL #1 to print on time led to the emergency creation of AVENGERS #1. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on this belief completely just yet, but I do feel the … Continue reading Lee & Kirby & Ditko & Everett: More on the linked stories of X-MEN #1, AVENGERS #1 and DAREDEVIL #1
A post from my defunct Marvel blog, part of a series detailing books that I had worked on that I still liked despite the fact that they were not terribly commercially successful. Bought this issue of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE at my regular 7-11 on one of my weekly trips. I'm pretty certain that this is the first book I bought during tat three-month period where Marvel tried to get rid of the cover month--I'm not certain what the purpose of that exercise was. Anyway, as a newly-born Fantastic … Continue reading BHOC: MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #38
The Powers-That-Be at DC Comics in the 1960s could see that something was going on over at Stan Lee's new upstart Marvel imprint, but they were ill-equipped to figure out just what. This is largely due to the fact that the editorial and creative staff remained largely unchanged since the halcyon days of the 1940s. … Continue reading Brand Echh – Inferior Five #6
A post from my old Marvel blog detailing the winners of the 2007 "Golden Loeb Awards" which I was running at the blog.
