1981 was a year of many anniversaries, and many anniversary issues as a result. This 25th anniversary issue of FLASH was built around a premise that was even then a bit old: Barry Allen wakes up in a hospital room, his body paralyzed and horribly scarred from the accident when lightning struck his police laboratory. … Continue reading 5BC: Five Best Comics of 1981
I bought this issue of BATMAN FAMILY on my regular travels to my local 7-11, as I was following the series regularly at this point, for whatever reason. I can't say that it was a particular favorite, and now that it was all-new, the appeal of those classic reprints was gone. I chalk it up … Continue reading BHOC: BATMAN FAMILY #15
EPISODE 35 "My name is Mazer. I don't know what to do!" - Mazer And so we reached the end of another broadcast week of STAR BLAZERS, this time with an episode that owed much of its structure and dramatics to EPISODE 13. But while that previous installment was designed to give us greater insight … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 35
Another month had gone by, and so another issue of ACTION COMICS had shown up at my local spinner rack in the 7-11 I frequented. ACTION was, by this point, a regular buy for me, despite the fact that most of the individual stories in this particular stretch were pretty forgettable--and indeed, I don't know … Continue reading BHOC: ACTION COMICS #478
It caused quite a stir a couple of years ago when the entirety of the original artwork to AMAZING FANTASY #15, containing the very first Spider-Man story, was anonymously donated to the Library of Congress. The art was among the earliest to go missing from Marvel's warehouse back in the late 1970s/early 1980s and nobody … Continue reading Lee & Ditko: AMAZING FANTASY #15
I bought FANTASTIC FOUR #189 at my regular 7-11--I can remember biking home up Granny Road with it. But the book was about to hit a prolonged production snag, as it turns out, and like CAPTAIN AMERICA #216 before it, it was the second seemingly-new Marvel title that would turn out to contain a reprint. … Continue reading BHOC: FANTASTIC FOUR #189
EPISODE 34 "Torbac, what are you up to? You have definite instructions to patrol the fringe of the Telezart area, not to advance into it. Prince Zordar of your Comet Empire has put me in charge of the defeat of the Star Force. I give the orders!" - Leader Desslok We were very much into … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 34
I can recall buying this issue of SUPERBOY & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES at my usual 7-11. No idea why I went for this issue in particular--the Legion was a very hit-or-miss proposition with me, most often coming down on the miss side. But for whatever reason, maybe it was the oversized page count, I … Continue reading BHOC: SUPERBOY & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #234
EPISODE 33 "You're so used to fighting that you don't know how to stop! You're at war with everybody!" - Doctor Sane As we got to the middle of this week of broadcast for STAR BLAZERS, we also moved into the middle of this second series--which meant that we were about to move into a … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 33
I'm pretty certain that my grandmother had brought this comic for me. I had thoughtlessly begun to badger her during the week to look for specific issues that I was interested in reading in the stores out her way, and she accommodated for a short period of time, before eventually just lying and saying that … Continue reading BHOC: SHOWCASE #96
