We now begin to approach an important crossroads in my comic book reading history. My family frequented a local drugstore, part of a chain, pretty regularly, and one day during this summer, the store put in this huge bin of comics. In my mind’s eye, it was massive, though in reality it was probably a … Continue reading BHOC: ACTION COMICS #458
It might have been the same trip to my Grandmother’s home as when I picked up SHOWCASE #95, it might not–but I know that I bought my copy of BATMAN FROM THE 30s TO THE 70s at a bookstore in the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream where she lived. It was a big purchase, … Continue reading BHOC: BATMAN FROM THE ’30s TO THE ’70s
EPISODE 9 “We’re going to have to step up our attack! It’s now or never! While we’ve been searching for the Argo, her Captain has been repairing his ship and when they’re finished, they’ll be able to use their cursed Wave-Motion Gun again, and you know what that can do to us! It’s our last … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 9
The second issue of SHOWCASE featuring the All-New Doom Patrol. I have a strong feeling of having picked this issue up while at my Grandmother’s house, though I’m not 100% certain of that. It’s got a dynamic Jim Aparo cover that really grabbed me, despite the liberties taken with Robotmans new design. You can also … Continue reading BHOC: SHOWCASE #95
EPISODE 8 “Escaped? Did they abandon the Pluto Base? Tell them to return and fight, and never come back to Gamilon. I never want to see their faces.” – Leader Desslok Episode 8 is the first example of another hallmark of the STAR BLAZERS series: the invasion of the enemy stronghold. It also wrapped up … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 8
I got this issue of BRAVE AND THE BOLD while out on a shopping trip with my Mom and brothers. It came from an unfamiliar and irregular outlet, so my selection was limited, which somewhat explains the choice. I was iffy on B& B (it was still one of those series that read “weird” to me”) … Continue reading BHOC: BRAVE AND THE BOLD #137
As a kid, one of my other interests apart from comic books was codes and ciphers. I was always fascinated by the ways in which information could be concealed and then deciphered, and I read a bunch of books on the subject. Even to this day, I retain some general knowledge relating to the subject. … Continue reading BHOC: MARVEL’S MYSTERIOUS SECRET MESSAGES
EPISODE 7 “There’s life on Pluto. If we use the Wave Gun, it means the destruction of all that life. We are not permitted to destroy life on planets of the Solar System. The Star Force is on a mission to save life on planet Earth. it would be wrong for us to destroy another … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 7
The new series of SUPER-FRIENDS hadn’t premiered yet–the show had been in constant reruns since it debuted in the fall of 1973. But over at DC, they knew what was happening, and writer E. Nelson Bridwell took the opportunity to introduce the new characters who’d be featured in the show ahead of time in a … Continue reading BHOC: SUPER-FRIENDS #7
I bought this issue of SUPERMAN at my usual 7-11. That’s a nice cover by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, an artist who’d begun to pop up across the DC titles, giving them a more modern sheen. He’d eventually wind up doing much of his work for DC’s licensing department, his drawing appearing on apparel and toys … Continue reading BHOC: SUPERMAN #316
