I'm pretty sure that this issue of CAPTAIN AMERICA came out of the same 3-Bag as yesterday's issue of INVADERS. It represents, among other things, my first real exposure to the writing of Jack Kirby. I had read a few Kirby stories before--an issue of KAMANDI several years earlier, a reprint of a Golden Age … Continue reading BHOC: CAPTAIN AMERICA #206
EPISODE 52 "Come on, Wildstar, you've done all you can here. The Argo has served us well, now Earth needs us." - Doctor Sane We had no idea, tuning in on that Tuesday, that the ten-and-a-half week journey of STAR BLAZERS was about to reach its conclusion. Wednesday would take us back around to the … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 52
Another source of comics to me during this period were the 3-Bags sold in chain department stores, supermarkets and toy stores in this era. For those who don't remember, each clear plastic bag would contain three recent comic books--my studies indicate that they tended to be around nine months old when released--for a single price. … Continue reading BHOC: INVADERS #13
This issue of ACTION COMICS would have been another book that I got from my grade school buddy Donald Sims. It's not a bit of a weird cover on it--Superman is so over-muscled here that he practically looks inflated. And I don't know that the lime green background is helping matters any either. All of … Continue reading BHOC: ACTION COMICS #464
EPISODE 51 "Wildstar, Wildstar...look, you've got to let me do this. I never thanked you...for rescuing me and my me on Brumis that time. It's hard for me to say things. This is my way of sayin' thanks. So long...see you back at the Argo!" - Sergeant Knox As Monday rolled around, we came to … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 51
This issue of POWER MAN, my first, would have been another comic that I got from by grade school friend Don Sims, likely in a trade involving multiple books. I say that because I wasn't especially interested in Luke Cage at this point. I knew who he was, based on his appearance in FANTASTIC FOUR … Continue reading BHOC: POWER MAN #38
This issue of FANTASTIC FOUR was another book that I got from my friend and classmate Donald Sims. We were only tight for about two years, taking up separate paths when we entered junior high school. I haven't seen him in easily 35-plus years. But I hope he's doing well. This was another FF issue … Continue reading BHOC: FANTASTIC FOUR #150
EPISODE 50 "Goodbye. I hope we meet again." - Leader Desslok The end of the week brought us one of the all-time greatest episodes of STAR BLAZERS and also one of the best animated. You can tell that the original Japanese production crew knew that they were making something special here in the added time … Continue reading In Our Next STAR BLAZERS Adventure – Episode 50
Don Sims was the first other regular comic book reader that I ever met, and we became fast friends for a few years--easy enough since we were in the same 5th and 6th grade classes. Like me, he not only read comics, but he made his own, a creative compulsion that united us once we … Continue reading BHOC: FANTASTIC FOUR #144
I bought this comic on our regular weekly trip to the supermarket. During this time, they had started carrying a few comics, mostly DC's Dollar Comics and a few other higher-priced items. This Special had been promoted in ads over the course of the past month, so it had an air of being special about … Continue reading BHOC: DC SPECIAL SERIES #8
