BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #456

I’m not 100% sure where this issue of DETECTIVE COMICS came from. I’m pretty confident that I didn’t purchase it. It may have been bought for my younger brother, which is the most likely explanation, or it may have been a book that I was traded at some point. In any case, it has an … Continue reading BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #456

BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #451

That’s a really pretty Dick Giordano cover. Still, I have no recollection of buying this issue of DETECTIVE COMICS, which makes me suspect that it may have been purchased by/for my brother, and eventually wound up with me. this wasn’t all that rare back in these days. I was much more of a comic book … Continue reading BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #451

BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #448

I had seen the cover of the first chapter of the “Bat-Murderer” serial in ads, so I was aware of it at least in theory. But for some reason, when I saw this issue of DETECTIVE COMICS, I figured that somehow the entire story would be contained herein. In this I was off-base–while this was the … Continue reading BHOC: DETECTIVE COMICS #448

BHOC: LIMITED COLLECTORS’ EDITION #C-28

Pretty sure that this one came from the 7-11 also, although I have a vague, nagging feeling that I may have sent away for it the same as ACTION #1. Either way, I next came into possession of this reprint of the first appearance of The Batman in DETECTIVE COMICS #27. I think the oversized … Continue reading BHOC: LIMITED COLLECTORS’ EDITION #C-28

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #408

A graphic DETECTIVE COMICS cover by Neal Adams, who here uses a succession of inset panels to build up the drama and horror of Robin disintegrating before Batman’s eyes to an emotional intensity. The lettering, too, is nicely done her.

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #402

Here’s a super-spooky Neal Adams DETECTIVE COMICS cover featuring Batman and his monstrous opposite number, Man-Bat. It’s really the colors that make this one pop–that pea-green background color and the fact that everything is lit by Batman’s lantern. The cover copy is a little bit weird, though–because of the need to dodge the DETECTIVE COMICS … Continue reading Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #402

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #143

Here’s a very fun Dick Sprang cover for DETECTIVE COMICS featuring an early confrontation between Batman and the Riddler.

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #347

A strong Carmine Infantino cover for DETECTIVE COMICS, incorporating ink wash as well as the typical linework. I love the anguish of Robin, and the particular phrasing on the copy burst imploring the reader to keep the ending a secret.

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #371

This DETECTIVE COMICS cover by Carmine Infantino is only good in that it’s so bad. Produced right at the end of the “Batmania” triggered by the television series, this cover compromises its characters for the sake of a cheap gag. There’s something a bit off about Batgirl’s right arm as well. All that said, it’s … Continue reading Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #371

Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #408

A very nice multi-paneled Neal Adams DETECTIVE COMICS cover. This almost feels like it should be on HOUSE OF MYSTERY or UNEXPLAINED rather than a super hero comic. As usual, Adams’ photo-realistic style heightens the drama of the moment.
