Great Covers – CAPTAIN AMERICA #332

A similar logo tilt and ground line tilt is employed on this CAPTAIN AMERICA cover by Mike Zeck, for the issue in which the U.S. Government strips Steve Rogers of his costumed persona. It’s a nice design, with the stripes of the flag becoming dripping blood, and Cap’s emotional state communicated by his body language … Continue reading Great Covers – CAPTAIN AMERICA #332

Great Covers – TEEN TITANS #23

Another makeover cover from the late 1960s, this one by Nick Cardy. It’s an interesting choice to follow the angle of the logo in the tilt of the ground line, but that helps to give the piece energy. But the spotlight here is on the new Wonder Girl, who is significantly overhauled from her drab … Continue reading Great Covers – TEEN TITANS #23

Great Covers – DAREDEVIL #6

Here’s a very simple and effective DAREDEVIL cover by Chris Samnee. Good use is made of the color of the trade dress of the Original Sin crossover to help draw attention to the red blanket around baby Matt, and the spotlight that falls upon his mother. It’s to Samnee’s credit that all of the other … Continue reading Great Covers – DAREDEVIL #6

Great Covers – WONDER WOMAN #178

The first great super hero makeover, this WONDER WOMAN cover by Mike Sekowsky makes its intentions plainly known, and introduces the new version of the heroine for the late 1960s. Everything about this piece screams modern and new, the type treatment, the swirling backgrounds, and the mod fashions Diana is sporting. The classic Wonder Woman … Continue reading Great Covers – WONDER WOMAN #178

Great Covers – AMERICAN FLAGG #1

Bold and stylish, this Howard Chaykin AMERICAN FLAGG cover immediately gets across what the tone of the series will be. It’s a typical iconic hero shot, combined with a classic patriotic cover theme. The copy, though, tells the real story, and sets the stage for what awaits within.

Great Covers – THE FLASH #189

Nobody did covers of extreme emotionalism better than Joe Kubert, and this FLASH cover is a good example. It’s drenched in melodrama, the huge word balloon dripping with pathos. Great use of color pulls your eye to the Flash uniform in Barry Allen’s hands, and silhouettes crybaby Kid Flash very nicely. And the drama of … Continue reading Great Covers – THE FLASH #189

Great Covers – TEEN TITANS #16

The great Nick Cardy using a non-traditional layout on this 1968 TEEN TITANS cover. Editorial Director Carmine Infantino began to experiment with cover layouts during this period, so the layout of this piece may have come from him. In either case, it’s eye-catching, and beautifully rendered by the always-expert Cardy.

Great Covers – ZOT! #33

Another evocative ZOT! cover by Scott McCloud. The composition and the facial expression communicate a feeling of alienation. Good use to texture and pattern as well, and subdued color.

Great Covers – FANTASTIC FOUR #110

Here’s something of a rarity: this John Buscema FANTASTIC FOUR cover was printed with its magenta and cyan plates reverse, resulting in a wildly strange color scheme. Since all of the colors in the image were composed of percentages of magenta, cyan, yellow and black, the result of this change is a bit of a … Continue reading Great Covers – FANTASTIC FOUR #110

Great Covers – AVENGERS #22

A striking George Perez AVENGERS cover that I edited. The thing that makes it the most striking, however, is the limited color palate of red, which was the idea of fellow editor Ruben Diaz. It was a great thought, focusing the eye on the triumphant Ultron and setting a mood of intensity. I also liked … Continue reading Great Covers – AVENGERS #22
