A very pretty Nick Cardy cover to GIRLS’ LOVE STORIES #139. The coloring takes its cues from the psychedelic imagery of the day. The only bit of this that I don’t love is the yellow streak that goes behind the cover copy, making it more difficult to read.

Great Covers – THE CREEPER #1
A super-cool kickoff cover to THE CREEPER #1 by ace artist Steve Ditko. Great, moody coloring on this one that really pops the yellows and reds of the Creeper’s costume. What’s interesting about this piece to me is that, were you unfamiliar with the character, you would be justified in thinking that the criminal was … Continue reading Great Covers – THE CREEPER #1
Great Covers – SUPER DC GIANT #S-17
Another great Nick Cardy cover, this one for LOVE 1970, a giant-size reprint collection of romance stories. It’s really the color that makes this one, the elegant use of yellow and orange hues to evoke the summer sun. Great, effective highlighting on the central figures as well.
Great Covers – INHUMAN #7
A very simple and stark INHUMAN cover by Ryan Stegman, of recent vintage. In modern times, there’s been a movement towards more design-oriented cover images, such as this one.
Great Covers – G.I. COMBAT #91
A very pretty Russ Heath Haunted Tank cover for an issue of G.I. COMBAT, made even more spectacular by the greytone work of Jack Adler. DC experimented with these sorts of greytone covers in the early 1960s to great effect–the end result always looked more photographic and more real.
Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #402
Here’s a super-spooky Neal Adams DETECTIVE COMICS cover featuring Batman and his monstrous opposite number, Man-Bat. It’s really the colors that make this one pop–that pea-green background color and the fact that everything is lit by Batman’s lantern. The cover copy is a little bit weird, though–because of the need to dodge the DETECTIVE COMICS … Continue reading Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #402
Great Covers – TEEN TITANS #17
A funky TEEN TITANS cover by Nick Cardy that evidences the influence of psychedelic posters and prints of the era on comic book cover imagery. The Teen Titans logo is re-lettered for this issue so as to better fit in with the tone of this piece.
Great Covers – MASTER OF KUNG FU #86
A very simple Mike Zeck cover for MASTER OF KUNG FU, relying on the character’s intensity of expression to ensnare prospective readers.
Great Covers – FANTASTIC FOUR #48
A pretty brilliant Jack Kirby cover to FANTASTIC FOUR. Rather than simply showing Galactus on this first appearance cover, Kirby instead chooses to focus on the reactions of the public, the FF, and most ominously, the Watch. Galactus himself isn’t seen until the final page of this issue.
Great Covers – BATMAN #200
A fun Neal Adams BATMAN cover for the book’s 200th issue, highlighting previous milestones from its history (and even using the logo from one of them as the title logo to this issue.)
