I owned two separate copies of this issue of FLASH, one of which was initially bought for my younger brother Ken. And it’s a good thing, too, because at some point soon after getting this issue, my father got angry with me for some infraction that I’d made and threw out all of my comic … Continue reading BHOC: FLASH #226

BHOC: SUPERMAN #272
I know that I owned this SUPERMAN 100-Page Super-Spectacular–my second book in this beloved format–but i remember relatively little about it beyond that. I’d imagine that this is because I didn’t have it for very long, for reasons that will become apparent in a few entries. I’ve always loved this format–the size and heft of … Continue reading BHOC: SUPERMAN #272
BHOC: ACTION COMICS #431
A little bit vague about exactly where this book came from, but I do remember my Mother reading it to me, or at least parts of it. This was the second part of a two-part story, but I’m not even sure that I realized that at the time, given how thoroughly the first chapter was … Continue reading BHOC: ACTION COMICS #431
Great Covers – DETECTIVE COMICS #408
A graphic DETECTIVE COMICS cover by Neal Adams, who here uses a succession of inset panels to build up the drama and horror of Robin disintegrating before Batman’s eyes to an emotional intensity. The lettering, too, is nicely done her.
Great Covers – TEEN TITANS #22
A super-dramatic Nick Cardy TEEN TITANS cover, with excellent use of color. That magenta dimension just looks dangerous and weird and horrifying, and the desperate body language of the three male Titans sells the drama.
Great Covers – SUPERMAN #53
Another classic image, the 10th anniversary issue of SUPERMAN gave us this cover by Wayne Boring that would go on to adorn T-Shirts and lunchboxes and hardcover books. The yellow of the outer circle is immediately eye-catching, but doesn’t overwhelm the central figure of the Man of Steel.
BHOC: LOIS LANE #136
Here’s another comic that I can’t explain owning, another issue of LOIS LANE. I didn’t get this one in a 3-Bag, so I’m somewhat befuddled. The only thing I can think of is that, on occasion, my Dad or my Grandparents would just bring me a comic after they’d been out somewhere, and that this … Continue reading BHOC: LOIS LANE #136
BHOC: JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #109
Bought this one at the 7-11 during another cigarette run. Picked it up because the Flash was on the cover (and I remembered seeing #107 four months earlier when I bought my first comic.) This was another book that I loved to death. I can remember taking it into Kindergarden class for Show-and-Tell one week, … Continue reading BHOC: JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #109
Great Covers – G.I. COMBAT #93
Another brilliant Jack Adler greytone cover, this time executed over the precision artwork of Russ Heath for this G.I. COMBAT cover. The coloring is lovely–I think the only misstep is the pink logo.
Great Covers – GREEN LANTERN #76
Another classic, and a true departure for this series, GREEN LANTERN #76 heralded a dramatic change in the title–bringing in both co-star Green Arrow and illustrator Neal Adams, and focusing the stories not on outer space threats but instead the real social problems down on Earth. The drawing here is super-dramatic, with Adams’ hyper-realistic style … Continue reading Great Covers – GREEN LANTERN #76
