The Battle of Lexington, Part Four

The concluding installment of our look at the fan comic book put together by future comics creators Kurt Busiek and Scott McCloud when they were high school students. It was produced between 1976 and 1978 and was never published professionally.

Kurt and Scott have been working on this story for close to two years now, and you can see Scott improving as it goes along. His anatomy and foreshortening is still pretty wonky, but he’s getting better at composing his panels and guiding the eye through the page. He’s also doing fewer panels to a page, which is good.

That first panel is a decent attempt at some Neal Adams-style foreshortening, even if it doesn’t entirely work. It has impact.

And that’s the end!

  1. And the Vision sums up the plot!

We initially had a more conventional ending planned, but who knows if we’d ever have reached that point?

Instead, we went off to college and did another unpublished superhero story set…at our college! Being able to reference specific backgrounds was fun.

This time, though, we made up new characters. We were learning.

      1. No, they’re co-owned by Scott and me, so I wouldn’t use them without him.

Maybe someday we’ll publish what exists of that story. It’s a marked improvement over THE BATTLE OF LEXINGTON.

Heck, we did another unpublished story in between those, that also has no other-company characters. It was better, too.

  2. How long did it take you guys to finish the project? Might be my imagination but it seems like the art kept getting better! I really wish you could put this out as a physical comic book, I would buy it for sure!

    1. We started it just before we started ninth grade, and we finished it shortly before we graduated.

Many of our friends who cameo in the story, we hadn’t met when we started it.

As I think I said in an earlier conversation, who knows? Maybe we’ll get permission someday to print it up as a charity fundraiser or something.
