When we left things off on this sequence revising the two-year marriage between Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the SUPERMAN newspaper strip between 1949 and 1952, and its eventual disillusionment, Lois had penned an article revealing to the world that her husband was really the Man of Steel. Making his way to the Daily Planet office, Clark thinks that the jig is up–but not only is everybody at teh paper unaware of the story and his double identity, but they seem to think that Kent isn’t even married at all! So what goes here?

Yes, that’s right. In order to not just eliminate the marriage but also to make it so that it was never real at all, writer Jack Schiff is about to resort to it all having been aliens using a mind ray on the Man of Steel.
From this point on, the storyline becomes a typical adventure in which Superman struggles to overcome the aliens who can control his mind, with the help of the alien woman Valna. It all comes out fine in the end, of course, but there’s only one final mention of the Superman/Lois Lane marriage–and then it’s consigned to the dustbin of history moving forward.

Tom, fabulous story arc. An untold tale of Superman. Extremely disappointed that IDW, which did a tremendous job reprinting the Superman Sunday and daily strips, basically stopped the project at this juncture. Why?

I have no idea, you’d need to ask somebody over there. My guess would be that teh sales just weren’t there to allow them to continue.

What they claim is they havent been able to find 1950s daily strips which meet their quality criteria. They have reprinted all the other dailys and sundays of the superman strip from 1939 to the end ofnit in the sixties.
