Great Covers – ACTION COMICS #52

Another beautiful and patriotic WWII-era cover by Fred Ray, for ACTION COMICS. A great use of primary colors to pop the figures forward–that yellow in the background could not be any stronger or richer. It’s largely been forgotten now, but three of the five characters pictured on this cover headined movie serials during that same decade, making them better known than a lot of other comic book characters–a testament to the selling power of Superman and ACTION COMICS in general.

  2. Mr.Ray knew what he was doing. That’s a perfectly drawn Superman right there. And the string figures around it showed the skill was his, not copying Joe Shuster. Knowledgeable as to how a body’s put together. My 2nd fave figure here is the Vigilante.
