Great Covers – BATMAN #246

This BATMAN cover image with its word balloon is almost funny, until you realize that it’s not. There’s something chilling about that hanging Robin figure, and the way the ground line is tilted in the manner used by the television series whenever focusing on the villains. Artist Neal Adams frames Batman in the oval formed by the arch of the doorway and the fence in the distance.

  1. According to Comics.org, that cover was actually drawn by Dave Cockrum and inked by Neal Adams. Their source? “Art credits from Julius Schwartz’s editorial records, provided by DC Comics.” Neal was a mentor to Dave, so it’s not impossible that Cockrum was working from a sketch by Adams or Infantino, and then once the former was finished inking it, it might as well have been done by him all along.
